Udyam Registration in 2026: Free, Aadhaar-Based, No Renewal — and Why Every Small Business Should Have It
Udyam registration is free, takes minutes and never expires. The revised MSME limits from April 2025, the step-by-step process, and the concrete benefits — delayed-payment protection, tender exemptions, priority lending — it unlocks.
In this article
Udyam registration is the government's MSME identity. It costs nothing, takes a few minutes, and never needs renewal — and without it you cannot claim most of the subsidies on this site, use the 45-day payment protection, or get the tender relaxations reserved for MSMEs.
Who counts as an MSME (from 1 April 2025)
| Category | Investment in plant & machinery or equipment | Annual turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | up to ₹2.5 crore | up to ₹10 crore |
| Small | up to ₹25 crore | up to ₹100 crore |
| Medium | up to ₹125 crore | up to ₹500 crore |
Both limits must be met for a category; crossing either moves you up. Investment excludes land and building; turnover excludes exports. The portal computes both from your ITR and GST returns — you do not type them in after the first year.
What you need
- Aadhaar of the proprietor, the managing partner, the karta, or an authorised signatory/director for a company or LLP.
- PAN of the enterprise (mandatory since 1 April 2021; for a proprietorship the proprietor's PAN).
- GSTIN, if you are required to be registered under GST.
- Bank account details, NIC code(s) for your activities, number of employees, and the date you started.
No documents are uploaded; everything is self-declared and cross-checked against government databases.
The process, step by step
- Go to udyamregistration.gov.in and choose "For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME".
- Enter the Aadhaar number and name, and validate with the OTP sent to the linked mobile number.
- Enter the PAN and type of organisation; the portal verifies the PAN and pulls ITR/GST data.
- Fill in the enterprise name, address, bank details, activity (manufacturing or services) and NIC codes — you can add several activities.
- Enter the number of employees and the investment and turnover figures for the current year (self-declared for a new enterprise).
- Submit. The Udyam Registration Number (format UDYAM-HR-06-0012345) is issued immediately, and the certificate with a QR code follows by email.
One PAN gets one Udyam registration; add all units and activities under it.
Benefits that actually matter
Delayed-payment protection. Under the MSMED Act, a buyer must pay a registered micro or small enterprise within the agreed period, capped at 45 days (15 days if nothing is agreed). Unpaid amounts carry compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate, and disputes go to the MSE Facilitation Council. Since FY 2023-24, the buyer also loses the income-tax deduction for the expense until it is paid (section 43B(h) of the 1961 Act, carried into the 2025 Act) — which has made large buyers far more punctual with Udyam-registered suppliers.
Collateral-free credit. CGTMSE cover, priority-sector lending status, and lower processing fees at many banks depend on the Udyam number.
Subsidies and schemes. Almost every scheme on this site — PMEGP, Haryana's 2026 policy, PMFME, ZED — requires it.
Government tenders. Exemption from earnest money deposit and, on GeM and many central procurements, relaxation of prior turnover and experience conditions for MSEs; 25% of central procurement is reserved for MSEs.
TReDS. Registered MSMEs can discount invoices on TReDS platforms; buyers with turnover above ₹250 crore must onboard.
Other: ISO certification reimbursement, patent and trademark fee concessions, and electricity-tariff and stamp-duty concessions in several States.
Keeping it current
- Update the profile when the PAN, address, bank, activities or organisation type changes.
- Classification is refreshed automatically each year from ITR/GST data. If you cross a limit, the upgrade takes effect after a one-year grace period; a downgrade takes effect from the next financial year.
- Keep the certificate PDF and QR-verify it when a buyer or bank asks — many still request the older Udyog Aadhaar, which stopped being valid on 30 June 2022.
Mistakes we see
- Paying an "agent" ₹500–2,000 for a free registration.
- Registering a company using a director's personal PAN instead of the company's PAN.
- Leaving out a second activity, then being told a scheme does not match the registered NIC code.
- Not updating a changed bank account, so a subsidy release fails.

Frequently asked questions
Is there any fee for Udyam registration?
No. Registration on udyamregistration.gov.in is free. Any website charging a fee is a private agent, not the government portal.
Does the Udyam certificate expire?
No. There is no renewal. The portal updates your classification automatically from ITR and GST data, and you must update the profile if your PAN, activity or address changes.
I am a trader. Can I register?
Yes. Wholesale and retail traders have been allowed to register on Udyam since July 2021, mainly to access priority-sector lending. Some scheme benefits remain limited to manufacturing and service enterprises.
What is the Udyam Assist Platform?
A route for informal micro enterprises that do not have a PAN or GSTIN to get a Udyam Assist Certificate through banks and other designated agencies, primarily for priority-sector lending. It is not a substitute for full Udyam registration once you have a PAN.
